Chancellor Sebastian Kurz is sticking to his words: normality should return by summer. However, he said, this does not mean that the crisis is over.

Chancellor Sebastian Kurz has already stressed several times that Austria could return to normal life by the summer of 2021. Kurz stuck to this assessment also on Saturday night: “With the vaccination, we will return to normality in the summer,” Kurz wrote at 6 a.m. on the short message service Twitter. However: the pandemic will “continue to occupy us with mutations,” the chancellor said.

And for these mutations, he said, it may take more vaccines and treatments. “We must prepare for this & for the phase after the summer,” Kurz continued: “The goal must be to adapt existing vaccines and therapies as quickly as possible or to produce new ones quickly – and to do this as independently as possible. In Austria, capacities in research, development and production have been worked on for months to achieve this.”

According to the Chancellor, Austria has been in close contact with its partners Denmark and Israel since the spring. “Now we want to expand the cooperation. I will therefore travel to Israel together with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen on March 4,” Kurz said.

There, Frederiksen and Kurz would meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to “agree on the closest possible cooperation in the research and production of vaccines and medicines.” The first priority, according to the chancellor, is to “accelerate the production and procurement of vaccines for the future.”
